About RMMS

Mission Statement

RMMS is a community that is committed to empowering students to become active, compassionate, lifelong learners.  We work with families as well as local and global communities to implement challenging interdisciplinary programs of international education.  We develop students that are respectful, inquiring, knowledgeable and reflective change agents who are empowered to create a sustainable planet and a more just and peaceful world.

About The School

The Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS) is a K-5 magnet school and the first elementary International Baccalaureate (IB) authorized school in southeastern Connecticut.  Excellence and equity have been core values at the heart of the RMMS philosophy.

RMMS was established in 1992 to offer the diverse student population of our region an innovative program demonstrating best educational practices within a multicultural curriculum.  In 2015, it applied and was accepted as an IB Primary Years Program candidate school, and in March 2019 RMMS was authorized as an IB World School with Primary Years Programme (PYP).  IB is an international non-profit with almost 6000 educational programs that are globally recognized as challenging, engaging, and relevant. Inquiry is a key instructional approach at IB schools, so students research topics and issues of local and global significance. Being part of the IB provides additional structure and extends the RMMS curriculum.

While providing a strong academic structure, IB schools also address the social, emotional, and physical needs of children which has always been a priority at RMMS as well.  Our students discuss and develop ten qualities found in highly effective people: caring, inquirer, thinker, principled, open minded, balanced, communicators, knowledgeable, risk-takers, and reflective.

Strong communication skills are a lifelong advantage our students obtain.  RMMS facilitates students developing these skills in both English and Spanish. Two levels of Spanish instruction are available to RMMS students.  Puentes is a highly rigorous dual language program where children learn to read, write, and converse in English and Spanish by studying literacy, science, social studies and math in both languages.  Parents apply to a second lottery process for the Puentes program.  Students not in the Puentes program receive Spanish multiple times weekly where they develop both Spanish language skills and culture.

Joining IB has strengthened RMMS’ international perspective and connected us to a global community of schools. We believe that we can inspire children to be knowledgeable, globally minded problem solvers who contribute to making the world a better place.
